The following series of video essays is the result of research into the representation of marriage in Romanian and Balkan cinema, conducted as part of the ECHO III: For Memory’s Sake project.

With this video essay, we propose a comprehensive perspective on the connections between social control and “true” love in arranged marriages, by examining women’s social position within the societies they come from and highlighting the visible and invisible political and social constraints at play.
